Find Out What Your 2021 Horoscope Says About the Year Ahead

With the game-changing, challenge-packed year that was 2020 squarely in the rearview mirror, the whole world is waiting with bated breath to see if its successor will be more benevolent. The answer, according to the planets? It's complicated but optimistic.

Although the year has already earned the reputation as host of the "Age of Aquarius," thanks to two big outer planets — taskmaster Saturn and expansive Jupiter — shifting into the fixed air sign on December 17 and 19 respectively, the fact is that no one is flipping a switch and instantaneously transporting us to a new era bursting with peace and love. But it's clear — even just looking at the fact that we'll be inaugurating a new president and the first female vice president and woman of color in the White House on January 20 — that we're beginning a new chapter.

The planets' joint trip through the sign of the Water Bearer will usher us even further down the road of a new era focused on prioritizing the greater good over the individual. Think: more social activism, a growing focus on using social media — or changing social media — to level the playing field, and scientific advancement aimed at benefiting the masses (cough, COVID-19 vaccines and treatments).

But as forward-thinking and humanitarian as Aquarius can be, it's also one of four fixed signs, all of which are resolute and stubborn in their own unique way. The others include Taurus (earth), Scorpio (water), and Leo (fire). And when two planets in fixed signs meet, they form a square, a tense aspect that can lead to conflict and unrest. Throughout 2021, we'll have Saturn, the planet of hard work, boundaries, and restrictions, in Aquarius squaring off against Uranus, the planet of surprises and revolution, currently moving through Taurus. This happens on February 17, June 14, and December 24.

Major aspects between two outer planets tend to nod to big picture trends and patterns for society as a whole, so these squares could mark turning points when we really feel the weight of the old guard butting heads with a collective desire for change. There's also a push-pull vibe to this aspect, but ultimately, it's a continuation of 2020's push to burn down structures that are no longer serving us and forge a new way forward. (Curious how it might affect you personally? Consider looking at your natal chart, and checking out which houses Uranus and Saturn will be transiting. You'll be able to get a sense of how you'll be torn between maintaining old structures and exploring new paths.)

It also bears noting that Jupiter will spend May 13 to July 28 in Pisces. The last time it occupied the dreamy, mutable water sign was in 2010. Think back to any areas of life that expanded or in which you felt especially fortunate. It's possible you'll see those themes repeated during this period. And for society as a whole, this transit might feel like a shift from cool and clinical (the vibe of both Capricorn and Aquarius, where Jupiter has spent time over the past couple of years) to more deeply feeling, romantic, and empathic. It could also make for a late spring and summer in which — thanks to that cool, clinical approach to the pandemic — it'll become easier to connect with loved ones and, ideally, process and heal old emotional wounds. Even before that, the light at the end of the tunnel should be growing brighter, thanks to go-getter Mars, the planet of action, moving into fast-paced, communicative, wanderlusting Gemini from March 3 to April 23. While this could set the stage for more scattered energy, it could also serve to power up relationships and the ability to travel more. This period also encompasses the astrological new year, aka the Spring Equinox and Aries season, which kicks off on March 20. You might find that's when you're finally able to gain momentum on — or at least begin to more easily articulate — your 2021 goals. (See: Why March Is the Best Time to Rethink Your Resolutions)

The year's four eclipses — three of which continue along the Sagittarius-Gemini axis, and one that is the first of the upcoming Taurus-Scorpio series — will also force the issue of change and growth. Keep these dates in mind:

  • May 26: Lunar eclipse and full moon in Sagittarius

  • June 10: Solar eclipse and new moon in Gemini

  • November 19: Lunar eclipse and full moon in Taurus

  • December 3: Solar eclipse and new moon in Sagittarius

But not all celestial bodies are on the change bandwagon. Power-hungry Pluto, moving as slowly as it does, will remain in cardinal earth sign Capricorn until 2024, continuing to fuel old-school, traditional thinking that's at odds with the growing push to create new foundations and power structures. Dreamy Neptune, which clouds rational thought, is also staying put in escapism-loving Pisces until 2025. On its better days, this transit allows us to harness the power of spirituality and imagination. On its darker days, it makes it difficult to understand where we're headed and clouds facts.

The bottom line: 2021 has a lot of potential for hope, spurring progress and a greater sense of community as well as innovation. It's just not going to come without some collective effort. We'll do best if we're willing to move past what once was and allow ourselves to dream more about what could be.

(Pro tip: Be sure to read your rising sign/ascendant, aka your social personality, if you know that, too. If not, consider getting a natal chart reading to find out.)

Aries (March 21–April 19)

Health: You can look forward to mid to late summer as an exciting moment to push forward on fitness goals. Thanks to go-getter Mars in your sixth house of daily routine and wellness from July 29 to September 14, you'll have more energy and focus to run that race you've been talking about or take your current strength training program to the next level. Striving to be more detail-oriented (think: tracking on an app) can help you get the results you're seeking.

Relationships: You could find more merit in self-love and understanding yourself psychologically and spiritually while lucky Jupiter moves through your twelfth house of spirituality from May 13 to July 28. While more solo time or time with a therapist or meditation teacher might not initially sound romantic, this can be a productive time for bolstering self-awareness, which will make it easier for you to ask for what you need from a potential match or current partner — and ensure those desires are fulfilled.

Career: With taskmaster Saturn in your eleventh house of networking squaring off against revolutionary Uranus in your second house of income three times this year — on February 17, June 14, and December 24 — you could be torn between the urge to strike out on your own as an entrepreneur to advance your hustle or joining forces with colleagues or friends. You'll benefit from seeing this conflict as an opportunity to pinpoint the foundation for moneymaking that suits you best in the long-run.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

Health: You'll be better able to infuse your fitness plan with a more social vibe this spring and summer. While social Venus, your ruling planet, moves through your sign from April 14 to May 8, it'll be easier to prioritize activities that bring you pleasure, especially alongside loved ones (think: more hikes with your BFF or yoga with your partner). Then, while it moves through your sixth house of wellness from August 15 to September 10, you can more effortlessly join forces with friends and colleagues to squeeze in healthy, everyday routines.

Relationships: Around May 26, the lunar eclipse in your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy could nudge you to tend to old wounds. The fact is that pain you've been brushing under the rug will no doubt affect your ability to truly connect with someone special, so it could be time to work through it. And around December 3, the solar eclipse renews your optimism and sense of adventure, making it easier to deepen a heartfelt bond.

Career: While lucky Jupiter moves through your tenth house of career from now until May 13 — and then again from July 28 to December 28 — you could feel like you have your pick of professional opportunities, and it's easy to earn recognition from higher-ups. This could be a brilliant time for stepping up to take on a leadership role. And then from May 13 to July 28, the expansive planet will spend time in your eleventh house of networking, magnifying your ability to connect with colleagues or friends in order to work toward a shared goal.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

Health: You could feel like hibernating for the first three months of the year, thanks to go-getter Mars in your twelfth house of spirituality, but come March 3, you'll enjoy a well-deserved burst of energy when the action-oriented planet shifts into your sign until April 23. You'll be fired up to shake up your current approach to wellness, signing up for sessions with a personal trainer or experimenting with a cool new meal planning app. A curious, up-for-anything approach serves you best.

Relationships: Around May 26, you'll feel the effect of the lunar eclipse in your seventh house of partnership, urging you to reevaluate your closest relationship (or situationship), considering whether or not it's as reciprocal as you deserve. It's time to be honest with yourself and whoever you're involved with. By December 3, when the solar eclipse occurs there, you could be ready to adopt a fresh perspective on what you're willing to give and what you want in return from a one-on-one bond.

Career: While lucky Jupiter moves through your ninth house of higher learning from now until May 13 — and then again from July 28 to December 28 — you'll want to take advantage of any opportunity to hone your skill set. It'll prepare you for the expansive planet's time in your tenth house of career from May 13 to July 28, you'll be ready to take on more responsibility and step into the spotlight on the job. Higher-ups will be impressed with any initiative you take now, and you might even feel comfier than usual pitching your most imaginative ideas.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

Health: You could have an eye-opening experience that serves to put your daily grind in perspective around May 26 when the lunar eclipse lights up your sixth house of wellness. If you've been putting your hustle above self-care for too long now, the universe is nudging you to find more balance for the benefit of your mind and body. By December 3, the solar eclipse there can have you feeling like you've made real progress — and are ready to take it to the next level.

Relationships: From September 10 to October 7, relationship-oriented Venus moves through your fifth house of romance and self-expression, allowing for more spontaneity and potential magic in matters of the heart. Moments in which you feel totally swept off your feet happen organically. And you can look forward to a sexy holiday season: From October 30 to December 13, action-oriented Mars spends time in your fifth house, amplifying your passion for connecting with someone special in a fun-loving, flirtatious, and super physical way.

Career: You could feel exceptionally fortunate when it comes to assets you're growing alongside a loved one or business partner, thanks to lucky Jupiter moving through your eighth house of emotional bonds from now until May 13 — and then again from July 28 to December 28. From May 13 to July 28, while the expansive planet moves through your ninth house of higher education, you'll find your appetite for knowledge and new experiences is amplified. Being willing to move out of your comfort zones can set the stage for more money and recognition.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Health: You didn't get a dose of fiery Mars' go-getter energy in 2020, but this year, from June 11 to July 29, the planet of action moves through your sign, making you feel more assertive and energized to make your most ambitious wellness goals a reality. You might feel like your commitments to others throw a wrench in your game plan at times, but knowing how and when to set boundaries can help you stay on track.

Relationships: You'll be in your feelings in a major way — and exploring new ways to express yourself with potential matches or your current S.O. — around May 26 when the lunar eclipse lights up your fifth house of romance. You'll get an intuitive hint that now's the time to speak your truth. And around December 3, the solar eclipse there can mark the start of a new phase in which you're empowered to stand up for your needs, and, in turn, you'll feel more seen by someone you love.

Career: Because taskmaster Saturn in your seventh house of partnership forms tense squares with game-changer Uranus in your tenth house of career three times this year — on February 17, June 14, and December 24 — you could feel a challenging tension between tending to your closest one-on-one relationships (romantic, platonic, and professional) and pursuing your own, longtime professional dreams. Striking a balance and saying "no" when necessary — at work or at home — will be key to basking in the spotlight and feeling supported at the same time.

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

Health: Simple but meaningful daily routines — whether that's a daily walk or sneaking in a quickie breathing exercise — are sure to keep you firing on all cylinders this year. That's thanks to lucky Jupiter spending a significant amount of time in your sixth house of wellness this year, from now until May 13, and then again from July 28 to December 28. And from July 29 to September 14, go-getter Mars in your sign offers a boost of energy that adds even more fuel to vitality-boosting practices.

Relationships: Fortunate Jupiter will move through your seventh house of partnership from May 13 to July 28, making one-on-one relationships not only your focus but an area of life in which you'll feel especially lucky. You'll be able to connect and collaborate more easily with someone special or your S.O. in addition to friends and business partners. Plus, joining forces with a partner can help you make progress on big picture goals.

Career: While go-getter Mars moves through your tenth house of career from March 3 to April 23, you'll be itching for higher-ups to acknowledge just how much you've been putting your nose to the grindstone. If it's not happening, channel this desire into self-promotion efforts, taking matters into your own hands (think: sending out resumes or exploring entrepreneurship). Around June 10, the solar eclipse there could force the issue, laying the groundwork for a new strategy to make your professional dreams a reality.

Libra (September 23–October 22)

Health: While lucky Jupiter moves through your sixth house of wellness from May 13 to July 28, you'll want to put extra effort toward helping others on the regular, whether that's through volunteer work or simply lending friends and loved ones a shoulder. But you might suffer from a tendency to overextend yourself, so you'll want to build in everyday routines that nurture your well-being and help you feel centered (think: talk therapy or those barre classes you love to stream).

Relationships: With taskmaster Saturn in your fifth house of romance squaring off against shocking Uranus in your eighth house of emotional bonds several times this year — on February 17, June 14, and December 24 — you could be challenged to show up differently in your closest relationships. Whether you've been holding off on a deeper commitment or avoiding tough talks that could change the game, this year will nudge you to be even more clear about what you want in love and intimacy.

Career: You'll have what it takes to crank up the intensity of your hustle while go-getter Mars spends time in your second house of income from October 30 to December 13. Whether you're throwing yourself into existing projects or new opportunities, it's crucial that you feel like the work is in line with your values, or you could risk seeing your passion flame out quickly.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

Health: While go-getter Mars is in your sign from October 30 to December 13, you'll feel empowered and energized to take your current fitness approach to the next level. More specifically, your focus could be on beating a record (such as your one rep max), crushing a long-term goal, and/or impressing friends or colleagues. While any of those motivators could keep you laser-focused, you could be happiest and healthiest when you follow your intuition and make moves that suit where you are in the moment. Yep, that means slowing down sometimes as well.

Relationships: Game-changer Uranus in your seventh house of partnership squares off against taskmaster Saturn in your fourth house of home life three times — on February 17, June 14, and December 24 — challenging you to reassess how and with whom you're feathering your nest and laying the foundation for long-term security. It could be time to open yourself up to seeing love and domestic life in a new light. This could manifest as moving into a bigger place with your S.O. or expanding your family — especially with magnifying Jupiter moving between your fourth house and fifth house of romance this year.

Career: You'll be rethinking your relationship with earning and possibly shifting gears with your moneymaking plan this year, thanks to two eclipses in your second house of income. Around May 26, the lunar eclipse has you in your feelings, considering whether your current work truly reflects your values. Answer that question, and embrace necessary changes, and around December 3, you could have a clear runway on which to launch a rewarding passion project.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Health: Shocking Uranus in your sixth house of wellness and boundary-setting Saturn in your third house of communication square off on February 17, June 14, and December 24, requiring you to research and reimagine your fitness plan. Perhaps, in the past, an all-or-nothing approach was your go-to, but now, you're getting the message that you'll do better if you opt for a more measured, step-by-step plan of attack. No matter what, allowing yourself to be open to learning and growing will be integral to landing on the result you have in mind.

Relationships: This year's eclipses in your sign and your seventh house of partnership continue last year's theme of bolstered self-awareness and how that can inform how you want to be in one-on-one relationships. Around May 26, the lunar eclipse in your sign requires acknowledging and processing heavy emotions. But by June 10, when the solar eclipse is in your seventh house of partnership, healing can give way to a renewed willingness to be vulnerable and communicative, allowing you to initiate or further build a lasting bond with someone special.

Career: While lucky Jupiter moves through your third house of communication from now until May 13 and again from July 28 to December 28, you'll naturally dream up one innovative, exciting pitch after the next. Brainstorming with friends and colleagues gets you even more fired up to learn, connect, collaborate, plan ahead, and grow professionally. As long as you can funnel all this mental buzz into your work, you'll enjoy well-deserved wins.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Health: Thanks to action-oriented Mars in your sixth house of wellness from March 3 to April 23, you'll have even more get-up-and-go than usual that you can apply toward your everyday grind, including experimenting in the kitchen and in your workouts. You could be more competitive during this time, too, but focusing on beating your own personal record will feel the best. And around June 10, the solar eclipse falls in your sixth house, inspiring you to approach your long-term aspirations in a whole new way.

Relationships: You'll have two special opportunities to acknowledge what brings you pleasure — and then attract that ultimate relationship — thanks to romantic Venus bookending the year in your sign. Its first trip will be from January 8 to February 1 and its second from November 5 until it goes retrograde there on December 19. With the love planet-forming harmonizing trines to transformative Pluto (in January and December), it's time to own what you deserve and go for it.

Career: You should have your choice of moneymaking opportunities and leads on promising new investments while expansive Jupiter moves through your second house of income from now until May 13 and again from July 28 to December 28. This is, at least in part, attributed to the fact that you truly believe in what you're setting out to accomplish, which bolsters your self-image. Keep embracing that, and you'll be pretty much unstoppable.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

Health: You could be torn between carving out time for yourself versus providing care to others, thanks to taskmaster Saturn in your sign forming tense squares to shocking Uranus in your fourth house of home life three times this year: on February 17, June 14, and December 24. Experimenting with setting new boundaries and shaking up existing precedents about how you relate to others — and to yourself — could ultimately help you feel more balanced and well.

Relationships: Get ready for a sexy springtime, because from March 3 to April 23, while go-getter Mars is in your fifth house of romance, you won't want to hold back from expressing what's in your heart — likely in a more physical way. Relating to a potential match or your current S.O. in a playful way (perhaps, an ambitious new sex position?) sends sparks flying. And around June 10, the solar eclipse falls in your fifth house, too, nudging you to embrace exciting changes in a relationship or, if you're single, your pursuit of one.

Career: Thanks to lucky Jupiter in your sign until May 13 and then again from July 28 to December 28, you could feel like growing an existing business or diving in on an ambitious big picture game plan is NBD. And when the fortunate planet dips into your second house of income from May 13 to July 28, all those brilliant ideas you've been pitching could bring in hard-earned cash.

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

Health: While fortunate Jupiter is in your sign from May 13 to July 28, you'll be feeling especially optimistic about life across the board. Take advantage of this sweet, sunny outlook by getting out of your comfort zone. Whether you're learning to paddleboard, spending a long weekend at a lake house, or doing a spiritual retreat online, eye-opening experiences will only serve to amplify your confidence and wellness.

Relationships: From February 25 to March 21, relationship-oriented Venus moves through your sign, and it'll be tough for you to deny yourself anything you're craving pleasurable or romantic — nor should you. In fact, this period — especially around March 13 when the sweet planet pairs up with spiritual Neptune — can be a powerful time to let your imagination run wild, then let your daydreams serve as the inspiration for heartfelt moments with someone special.

Career: You'll want to hold in mind any epiphanies you've had in 2020 related to your professional aspirations because they'll continue to evolve this year. Around May 26, when the lunar eclipse falls in your tenth house of career, you might have a lot of feelings about how far you've come and where you want to go. Trust what's in your heart, and by the time the solar eclipse occurs there on December 3, you could be steering down an uncharted but promising new path.
